142nd Engineer Combat Battalion (42nd Inf Div) &
124th General Hospital

On this page I am displaying photographs taken by a member of the 42nd Infantry Division in post-war Austria. I do not know the veterans name nor do I have any detailed information on his service during this period. I believe that he was a member of the 142nd Engr (Cbt) Bn which was organic to the 42nd Infantry Div. At the time these pictures were taken (probably autumn of 1945), the unit appears to have been stationed at Glasenbach, outside of Salzburg. Unfortunately, although he did leave us some great photos of the unit, his buddies and the surroundings, he did not provide much detail in the few cryptic remarks left on the back of some of the photos. Where possible, I have added some information from my own resources.

Interestingly, the photographer also included a number of photos of the 124th General Hospital, also at Glasenbach. If he was reassigned to that unit or the unit just happened to be collocated with the 142nd, I don't know. However, it does appear that the 124th photos were taken in the winter of 1945/46, a few months after those of the 142nd.

UPDATE March 15, 2002: I recently obtained additional photos from the same 42nd Inf Div vet.

UPDATE April 22, 2002: I recently obtained additional photos from the same 42nd Inf Div vet. I marked the additions with the logo.

If anyone has additional information or comments about these photos, please contact me.
