Historical Research

The Austrian Broadcasting Cooperation ORF is looking for film materials in order to continue the documentation project "Austria in color - the time of occupation".

Robert Gokl and the archive of the ORF count on amateur or first time filmmakers.

The ORF continues its production "Austria in color": The aim of the project is to present Austrian history by using early and unknown color film materials.

The first episode of "Austria in colour" was broadcasted by the ORF on January the 11th 2002. As this show turned out to be a tremendous success, it is going to be continued.

The next episode begins with the end of World War 2 and covers 10 years to the treaty that marked the beginning of Austrian independence as a republic in 1955. Within this period of time Austria was torn between dictatorship and democracy, capitalism and communism.

Emphasis is put on the life of ordinary people rather than celebrities of Austria that was back than quartered as well as occupied.

In co-operation with the historical archive of the ORF the director Robert Gokl is searching for private home-movies of family parties or rural feastivities as well as visual documents showing the contemporary working world and spare time activities.

For Robert Gokl: "the memory of a whole generation is painted black and white". The story told by "Austria in colour - the occupation" is a different one as the colourful enable people to draw positive associations with the time covered. Amateur movies of certain political or cultural events are collected as well, to present a balanced picture of contemporary society. Furthermore, the origin of the movie as well as the personal history of the people behind the camera is also of great importance. The question why people wanted to immortalise certain events is part of the whole.

Until today innumerable film documents are rotting in basements and attics. Some are known within the family but not to a broader audience. So please, whoever is in possession of film documents that were produced in Austria between 1945 and 1955 make contact with either Renate Tuma or Alexander Hecht.
